Greenpeace is speaking up for the general public, by telling the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that they have no right to claim that GMOs are safe for Americans, or anyone else. Some call Greenpeace a militant environmentalist group, but with the recent science coming out about how harmful pesticides are to pollinators, and therefore a large portion of the food supply, Greenpeace would more appropriately be called sane or conscientious.

The FDA and Monsanto have repeatedly told us that GMOs are safe to eat and pose no risk to the environment, but numerous scientific studies are calling that backwards logic into question. Daniel Ocampo, a sustainable agriculture and genetic engineering campaigner for Greenpeace Southeast Asia says:

“The FDA should stop feeding the public with propaganda. They are not truthful in saying that GMOs are safe for consumption. There is no scientific proof that GMOs pose no danger to human health and the environment. Even the scientific community is divided on whether GMOs are safe.”

 

In just one example of a recently corroborated study, Cry-toxins found in GMOs were linked to a higher rate of leukemia, and possibly other cancers.

Greenpeace sent a letter to the state this week urging them to be more forthcoming in the studies coming out on GMOs – even the ones that talk about cancer risks, organ failure, reproductive issues, the creation of colony collapse disorder (death of large numbers of bee colonies), soil depletion, and possibly even DNA alteration. The letter urged the FDA to disclose that “80 percent of the GMOs in the world are planted only in four countries, namely the (United States), Canada, Brazil and Argentina.” While scientists n countries largely outside of the US urge the general public to look closer at the benefits/harm that GMOs pose, the FDA announced that ‘eating GM foods is safe’, citing the Codex Alimentarius or the United Nations’ regulations on the safety of eating them.

Another concern raised by Greenpeace is the fact that genetically modified organisms can spread by interbreeding with natural, organic organisms, thereby contaminating them and creating for future generations, unforeseeable and possibly catastrophic health problems. Once GMOs take over a large portion of the crops planted throughout the world, they could, do, and will continue to contaminate unaltered crops for generations to come. They close their letter by stating our food supply is to precious to be messed with, especially when the science supporting GMO benignity is shoddy at best.
